Susan Soccolich is a Research Associate with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute’s Division of Freight, Transit, and Heavy Vehicle Safety. Ms. Soccolich has over a decade of research experience examining a range of driver and driving-related health and safety topics through survey-based and naturalistic driving studies. At VTTI, Ms. Soccolich assists with all aspects of the research process, with a strong focus on formulating data collection and analysis plans, analyzing data, and writing and presenting research findings. Research projects have focused on improving roadway user safety through studies of wide-ranging issues involving commercial motor vehicle drivers, vehicles and technology, roadways, and the environment. She has contributed significantly to studies sponsored by both the public and private sponsors, including research on driving regulations; distraction behaviors in drivers of heavy trucks, buses, and light vehicles; driver fatigue and drowsiness; the prevalence, risk, and treatment of sleep apnea; commercial driver detention; and the impact of advanced vehicle technologies on driver safety. She has spoken at forums, with carrier representatives, and on radio on the importance of reducing driver distraction.
